Tiraspol demanding more Russian peacekeepers in Moldova

Since 2001, dialog between Moldova and Transnistria has been developing with great pain, "so we just can't see any conditions for or guarantees of our security", believes Transnistrian JCC Co-Chairman Oleg Belyakov.

The Joint Control Commission (JCC) for the Transnistrian Conflict Settlement held its ordinary working meeting on Thursday, after which Belyakov stated to the press that Transnistria had addressed to Moscow requesting to increase the Russian peacekeeping contingent strength to 2.4 thousand persons [currently under 1.5 thousand].

"We also request to restart the functioning of the Russian helicopter squadron, which would help consolidate stability and prevent complications in the Security Zone", said the Tiraspol official.

In his words, by this request Transnistria is not violating whatever accords in force - neither the recent Odessa Accords nor the 1992 ceasefire agreement. As for the current peacekeeping contingent, Transnistria is insisting on adopting a unified staff list of peacekeeper forces, precisely as it was recommended by the OSCE Mission to Moldova in 2003.

"This would permit to regularly hold troop musters and inspections, make reciprocal checks and so forth. However, the Moldovan side refuses to have such a list, thus showing it is not projecting to have its subdivisions in would-be united peacekeeper forces", said the Transnistrian JCC Co-Chairman.
