Tasers prompt protest
The U.N. Committee Against Torture say U.S-made Tasers constitute a form of torture, throwing into question use of the increasingly common police tool.
The United Nations panel, at a recent meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, likened the device's painful shocks to torture and said they "could also cause death" in certain cases, The New York Times reported Monday. The committee cited "several reliable studies" which are disputed by the company, the newspaper said.
Taser International, makers of the stun gun, contends its device has generally been found not to blame for in-custody deaths or deaths following a confrontation with police.
"Historically, medical science and forensic analysis has shown that these deaths are attributable to other factors and not the low-energy electrical discharge of the Taser," the Scottsdale, Ariz., company said in a statement. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
