Muslim leaders in Egypt may follow Saudi Arabia's lead and use the latest technology to publish Islamic legal rulings known as fatwas.

The new Saudi Web site publishes official fatwas issued by authorized scholars, the BBC reported Sunday.

In Egypt, the head of the prestigious Al-Azhar University has said dedicating a satellite television station to official fatwas would reduce confusion.

At present, Egypt faces fatwas chaos with Muslim scholars issuing rulings that clash with the official line of the religious establishment, said Ahmed al-Tayeb, head of the university.

The Saudi site allows visitors to ask questions and receive replies from Islamic scholars steeped in the conservative interpretation of Islamic Sharia law, the BBC reported.

A section of the Saudi site is devoted to Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Baz, who died in 1999 and was known for controversial fatwas, such as the one he issued in 1991 that prohibits women from driving cars. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
