Russian passport holders in Moldova's Transnistria on the rise
Russia continues to issue its citizenship to Dniester residents (aka Transnistria, Moldova's separatist region), so that the number of holders of Russian passports amounted to 150,000 compared with 130,000 half a year ago, the foreign minister of Moldova's rebel region, Vladimir Yastrebchak, has said.
The Dniester official website Olvia-press quoted Yastrebchak as saying that the process of issuing Russian citizenship is mainly aimed at ensuring the right to free movement. "One can travel only to Abkhazia and South Ossetia with Dniester IDs. But to do this one needs to cross Russia and Ukraine," he said.
Yastrebchak also said that the number of holders of Ukrainian passports stands at about 100,000.
The overall population of the Dniester region is about 550,000.
