Russia continues its support to Moldova’s breakaway Transnistria
Another tranche of Russia’s humanitarian aid was transferred onto the account of the Supreme Soviet of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic – 223.5 million Russian rubles (US$7.16 million).
According to a statement by press release of the Transnistrian Supreme Soviet, these resources are designed for paying increments to pensions and the improvement of meals in children’s social and medical institutions.
In the response to the Transnistrian Supreme Soviet’s request to render financial assistance to Transnistria in the connection with the world crisis, Russia transferred about 500 mission rubles (over US$14 million) in two tranches from the beginning of the year in February and in March. It allowed raising the minimal pension size by 45%, improving meals in kindergartens, boarding schools, medical institutions. Transnistrian President Igor Smirnov said in March after his meeting in Moscow with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that Russia will grant US$200 million in 2009 for supporting the Transnistrian industry, the National currency and the pension fund.
In 2007-2008 Russian granted about US$30 million to Transnistria for overcoming the drought consequences. In 2006 Russia’s assistance constituted US$77 million under the pretext of the economic blockade of Transnistria on the part of Moldova and Ukraine.
