Romanian president Traian Basescu to visit Moldova on 27 January

Romanian President Traian Basescu will pay a visit to Moldova on 27-28 January 2010 at the invitation of Moldovan acting President and Speaker Mihai Ghimpu, according to the parliament's media relations department.

In the morning of 27 January, Mihai Ghimpu, Moldova's official delegation and representatives of the Romanian embassy in Chisinau will meet Traian Basescu at the Chisinau International Airport. Romania's official delegation comprises: Administration and Interior Minister Vasile Blaga, Economics, Trade and Business Environment Minister Adriean Videanu, Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Radu Berceanu, Regional Development and Tourism Minister Elena Udrea, Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu, Secretary of State for relations with Romanians from abroad Eugen Tomac, Senator Viorel-Riceard Badea, MP Tudor Pantiru and the head of the Iasi county council, Constantin Simirad.

Subsequently, Traian Basescu will have a face-to-face meeting with Mihai Ghimpu, after which he will participate in a joint meeting of the Moldovan and Romanian official delegations. At the end of these events, the two leaders will make press statements and journalists will have the possibility of addressing two questions each.

The visit's agenda also includes a ceremony of awarding the Order of the Republic to Traian Basescu, a ceremony of laying flowers at the monument to Stefan cel Mare and the monuments to poets Grigore Vieru and Ion Vatamanu, singers Ion and Doina Aldea-Teodorovici, and politicians Anton Crihan, Gheorghe Ghimpu and Nicolae Costin.

On the same day, Traian Basescu will have meetings with Prime Minister Vlad Filat, Chisinau general mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, leaders and representatives of the parliamentary factions: Communist Maria Postoico, Liberal Ion Hadarca, Democrat Dumitru Diacov, Liberal Democrat Mihai Godea and Vasile Balan of the Our Moldova Alliance and the leaders of the ruling Alliance for European Integration: Mihai Ghimpu, Vlad Filat, Marian Lupu and Serafim Urechean.

On 28 January, Romanian President Traian Basescu accompanied by Mihai Ghimpu will participate in a ceremony of laying flowers at the Romanian Parcel of Honour in a cemetery in the village of Cania, and at the Romanian Cemetery of Honour in the village of Tiganca, both in the southern Cantemir district. Subsequently, the two leaders will head to Cahul, southern Moldova, where they will deliver speeches at the State University Bogdan-Petriceicu Hasdeu and will visit the headquarters of the future Romanian consular office.
