Romania to continue backing Moldova's European integration

Prime Minister Vlad Filat has met Romanian Economy, Trade and Business Environment Minister Andriean Videanu, the government's press service has said.

Attending the meeting was Romanian Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Moldova Marius Lazurca, members of a delegation accompanying Andriean Videanu on his visit to Chisinau, as well as Deputy Prime Minister, Economics Minister Valeriu Lazar.

The participants in the meeting discussed bilateral relations, prospects for further collaboration and the two countries' energy security.

The principal subject to discussion was the inter-connection of power transmission and gas supply systems. The sides also considered additional opportunities of bilateral cooperation in energy security.

In particular, the officials discussed the implementation stage of the project targeting the construction of a 400 KV inter-connection electricity line Balti-Suceava. At the same time, the sides examined an opportunity to inter-connect the electricity lines in the direction Ungheni-Iasi, within the construction of a power station in Ungheni, western Moldova.

The sides also agreed to construct a gas pipeline to inter-connect the national gas supply system to the Romanian one in the direction Ungheni-Iasi. The system will eventually allow delivering gas in both directions, and beneficiaries will be consumers from Moldova and Romania.

Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that Moldova's energy security is a priority and a strategic goal of the Moldovan government. He voiced confidence that the understandings reached between the two countries' authorities will be fully implemented. He stressed with satisfaction that these agreements are carried out according to the schedule.

"Energy independence offers a completely different atmosphere and conditions of activity," the prime minister said.

Vlad Filat thanked the Romanian official, as well as his colleagues from the Romanian government for the attitude towards Moldova and the provided support. He emphasized that most recenty reached understandings are being implemented.

The Moldovan prime minister spoke out for elaborating a clear agenda to establish the priority projects which are to be carried out to achieve palpable results. These subjects are to be discussed in detail within a visit to Bucharest by a Moldovan governmental delegation, due in the immediately next period.

Adriean Videanu reiterated that Romania will continue backing Moldova's European integration path in all the cooperation dimensions.
