Romania to accelerate citizenship granting procedure to Moldovans

Romania shall accelerate the procedure of granting the Romanian citizenship for Moldovans, the Realitatea TV channel's website quoted Romanian President Traian Basescu recently.

The website wrote Basescu stressed the incumbent Law on Citizenship fully corresponds to the German model and is thus well within the European legislation. Basescu once again confirmed his resolution to provide the Romanian citizenship to 1 million residents of the Republic of Moldova.

‘Expressing pity that merely 50-70 applications a week can be considered at the present time, the President is going to build up the administrative apparatus so as to increase the productivity of supplying the Romanian citizenship for Moldovans up to 1 thousand a week’, the website wrote.

Commenting the situation Romanian political scientist Ilie Saftiuc said it is not quite correct to compare the accelerated citizenship granting with the German model. He presumes this is an overt hinting at the reunification of the Western Germany with the Eastern Germany, but the very nature and form of that reunification had nothing in common with the nature of the Romania/Moldova neighborhood.

Moldovan political scientists are also commenting media reports about the Romanian leader's fussing around the 'passportization' of the Republic of Moldova citizenry. They presume all this is being done not without a silent blessing by the EU, ‘otherwise how should one interpret Basescu's statement, quoted by the website, that nobody in Europe has yet seriously demanded from Romania to give up this [citizenship] plan?’
