Romania shares EU’s position on Transdniestria settlement

Romania is in favor of a quick settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict in the 5+2 format, by preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova, Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu said during a joint meeting with his Moldovan counterpart Andrei Stratan held in Chisinau.

“We consider that the EU should more actively engage as its role is determinant. We share the EU’s position on this issue and this stance is welcomed by all the partners participating in the talks in the 5+2 format,” the Romanian official said.

This assertion runs counter to an earlier statement made by Diaconescu. He said that Romania should be directly involved in the negotiation process, not only through the agency of the EU. Romania’s President Traian Basescu expressed the same position. He stated that the format of the talk should be modified so that Romania is also involved.

For his part, Andrei Stratan reiterated that the Moldovan authorities support the idea of identifying a solution to the Transdniestrian conflict at talks in the 5+2 and no other format.
