Romania and Russia, rivals just like in 1942

by Ana-Maria Spînu

Analyzing the Romanian diplomatist's arrest, accused of attempt to obtain secret military information from a Russian citizen, the online publication Forum.msk evokes a similar case that happened in 2009.

At that time, a Bulgarian citizen and a Romanian officer were arrested in Bucharest, with the accusation of having been spied either for Russia, or for Ukraine. Later, the Romanian authorities' inquiry found the agents were divulging secret information to Ukraine.

The publication mentioned three main elements that turns a third-world country, like Romania, into a potential enemy. Thus, according to this Russia's military forces, industrial production and its geopolitical status can create enemies among powerful actors on international arena, such like USA, Great Britain , China, but also other enemies among the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) – Ukraine, Moldova, etc.

The site states that, after the communist period, Romania came back to the geopolitical goals it had during the second world war, when being allied with Germany and Italy. Thus, the online publication writes that Romania became capitalist and integrated into NATO and EU, but its ambitions are the same it had in 1942.

Romania is described as a country with territorial pretension, especially in Ukraine and Moldova. The Russian site writes that Romania managed to annex a part of the Serpents' Island with the support of European Justice institutions, and now it has pretension in Bucovina (a region of Ukraine now) and the whole Moldova, a CIS member.

Journalist writing for this publication ask rhetorically if this reasons are not sufficient for UN to consider Romania an aggressor state. At least Russia can not ignore these “ambitions of Romania”. Both Moldova and Ukraine are in Russian sphere of influence. Thus Romania becomes a rival, from geopolitical point of view, and also on the military technologies market. That being said, the hypothesis that Gabriel Grecu would have tried to find out military secret information becomes credible, according to this site.

Finally, the publication alerts Russia, that, is said to have a naïve and ever changing attitude towards Romania, as it doesn't operate spy campaings in Romania, the same as Romania does in Russia.
