Reconciliation à la Moldova: Mayor Chirtoaca charged w/ "crimes"
The Moldovan Prosecutor-General's Office has opened a criminal investigation against Chisinau mayor and deputy leader of the opposition Liberal Party Dorin Chirtoaca who is charged with usurping power and organizing the April 6-7 riots in the capital city.
Last Friday, Chirtoaca was summoned to the prosecution and questioned for more than two hours. The prosecution decided that Dorin Chirtoaca would be investigated at liberty, being obliged to appear for questioning whenever subpoenaed.
For his part, Chirtoaca has described the case as political and the accusations as groundless. He said that prosecutors brought no evidence but only general accusations, such as organizing groups of pupils to participate in the protests.
"It is obviously a political case, the goal of which is to conceal the truth about what happened on 7 April and to manipulate the public opinion", Chirtoaca said.
Chirtoaca's lawyer Ion Casian described the case as "an attempt to intimidate the opposition and the mayor not to participate in the forthcoming early parliamentary election". "But we believe that the law is on our side. These allegations are absolutely groundless", he said.
