Rebel region to participate in Moldovan-Ukrainian border demarcation

Representatives of [Moldova's breakaway] Dniester region will participate in the demarcation of the central stretch of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, the spokesperson of the Moldovan Foreign and European Integration Ministry, Valeriu Turea, told a news conference on 9 December. He said that Moldovan and Ukrainian experts took a decision on the matter during consultations held in Kiev in late November. Turea said the sides also decided to invite EU representatives and members of the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine to participate in the demarcation of the Dniester border stretch. He admitted that there were a string of difficult issues in relations between Chisinau and Kiev which required mutual compromise.

On 4 December, Dniester foreign minister Vladimir Yastrebchak said that the region should be involved in the border demarcation process and that it was ready for "bilateral demarcation of our border with Ukraine". He said that Ukraine would not be ready to take this step until the Moldovan-Dniester conflict is settled.
