Railway traffic between Moldova and Transnistria will be resumed soon
The railway traffic for goods transportation between Moldova and Transnistria will be resumed. The announcement was made by Vlad Filat who met with the Transnistrian leader Evgheny Shevchuk in Tiraspol today.
“The main goal for us is to improve the life condition of our citizens. The freedom of movement of persons, goods, the development of economic and social relations – is determined by our activity,” Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat said.
Evgheny Shevchuk said that the resumption of the railway traffic is a joint interest for all parts. He stated that the problem is quite old, emphasizing the need to find a compromise solution.
“We think that such an agreement is convenient for both right and left bank of Nistru River. We hope (the agreement) will be implemented in 30 days,” Mr. Shevchuk said.
Erwan Fouéré, the OSCE Special Representative of the Chairperson-in-Office for the Transnistrian settlement process, welcomed the decision.
I welcome the agreement to restore full railway services for people and freight,” Mr. Fouéré said.
“People on both sides of the river and local businesses will benefit, and I commend the parties for their constructive and problem-solving approach to issues of mutual concern,” the official added.
“The progress we have seen here is encouraging as we have just resumed official talks in the settlement process, and I am looking forward to my meetings in Chisinau and Tiraspol next week,” said Fouéré.
Two checkpoints will be established – in Varnita and Rabnita and the security check will be quite sophisticated. At the same time the passenger transportation will still be prohibited.
