Polish election winners forming coalition
Polish general election winner, the pro-EU Civic Platform, is winding up talks on a coalition government with the Peasant Party, a party official said Monday.
Grzegorz Schetyna, secretary of the center-right, pro-business Civic Platform, said the talks with the centrist Polish Peasant Party on the coalition government should end by Thursday, the Polish News.pl Web site reported.
Civic Platform’s leader Donald Tusk and Waldemar Pawlak, chairman of the Peasant Party, have agreed that Pawlak would be deputy prime minister and economy minister in the coalition government, which will be led by Tusk, Poland’s TVN24 television said.
Civic Platform won the most seats in the parliament’s 460-deputy lower house, the Sejm, but not enough to control the parliament and to rule alone.
With Civic Platform’s 209 deputies and the Peasant Party’s 31 deputies, their coalition would make up the majority of 240 deputies.
The conservative Law and Justice party, which led a coalition government over the past two years, won 166 seats and goes into opposition.
