The European Union should sign a new cooperation agreement with Moldova only after the 2009 legislative elections because the Communist government has not implemented the necessary reforms and will use this accord for electoral purposes, representatives of the Liberal Party of Moldova (PL) say.

Mihai Ghimpu, the president of the Liberal Party , has told a news conference on Thursday that as the Communist government does not have political will to implement the EU-Moldova Action Plan and the commitments made to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe are not fulfilled, Vladimir Voronin does not have the moral right to ask that this agreement be signed before the 2009 parliamentary elections.

The PL representatives say that the Communist government finds multiple ways of manipulating the population as regards the alleged European orientation of Moldova, especially before elections.

The Mayor of Chisinau and vice president of PL Dorin Chirtoaca said that the head of state speculates about new agreement with the EU instead of basing on real facts and trying to be more creditable. “The EU-Moldova Action Plan has been implemented for three years, but we do not have results only certain legislative modifications. Therefore, the Communist party should admit defeat,” Chirtoaca said.

“The Communists won the 2001 elections with sausage and vodka, the 2005 elections – with promises about Moldiova’s integration into the EU. Now, as they understood they used up their manipulation instruments, they try by any means possible to keep their voters,” Ghimpu said. He also said that this year PCRM could garner less than the 6% needed.

According to the Liberal Party, given that about 70% of the population want Moldova to become an EU member, the executive pretends to be implementing reforms and regularly misinforms the international organizations so as to continue attracting European funds, which in reality are not used in the interest of the people.//REPORTER.MD
