Pantiru urges for faster process of regaining Romanian citizenship

The existing mechanism of restoring the Romanian citizenship by Republic of Moldova residents needs improvement. It must work faster to save applicants from waiting so long, MP Tudor Pantiru stated at a session of the Romanian Chamber of the Deputies.

He believes, given the great number of applications from Republic of Moldova citizens, the Romanian Government should urgently improve the existing legal mechanism of restoring the Romanian citizenship.

Pantiru stated that some applications are considered as long as 10 years. As a result, less than 100 thousand applications have been met last 2 decades, or some 5 thousand a year, on the average.

He said that although the citizenship law was amended lately, those were mainly 'cosmetic changes' only, which have not improved the situation as a whole.
