PACE: Moldova needs to amend presidential election mechanism
Moldova needs a wider political reform. But at this moment, it is necessary to amend only Article 78 in order to get out of the present political deadlock, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Mevlut Cavasoglu told a news conference today.
The European official said that Moldova should put an end to this stalemate. Therefore, the fact that the political forces ruled to set up a parliamentary commission to revise Article 78 of the constitution is welcome.
The fact that all political forces delegated representatives to this commission is an encouraging sign. "On this ground, I call on the all the political forces to show political responsibility to establish constructive dialogue, so as to reach consensus on Article 78," Cavasoglu said.
The PACE president added that the Council of Europe is willing to help Moldova in this dialogue. "The European institutions are ready to mediate this process, if necessary, and also to become a guarantor of the agreement due to be reached by the political forces."
Cavasoglu specified that it is clear that, in the long run, the constitution will have to be revised so that Moldova's fundamental law meets the needs of a country that wants to join the EU. Also, the European official asked the opposition not to boycott the parliament meetings. They should "fulfill the wish of their voters in the parliament."
The leader of the opposition, Vladimir Voronin, asked Parliament Speaker Mihai Ghimpu for a meeting to discuss the issue.
