OSCE appeals to Russia to finalize withdrawal of its troops from the ex-soviet Republic of Moldova
Elena Vnorovscaia / Chişinău / Moldova.ORG / -- Today the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, which provides a forum for parliamentary diplomacy, monitors elections, and strengthens international cooperation to uphold commitments on political, security, economic, environmental and human rights issues, is going to adopt a resolution, regarding the current situation in the Republic of Moldova, an ex-soviet republic.
The main focus is put on the Transnistrian conflict. Recall Transnistria is a Moldova’s enclave on its eastern border with Ukraine that is supported by the Russian Federation.
The Annual Session, including committee debates and votes occurs in Belgrade. The voting brought together representatives from 55 European countries.
The resolution was developed by Swedish MEP Walburga Habsburg Douglas on the results of her visit to Moldova.
“I welcome the vibrant and direct dialogue on Moldova that our Assembly is known to foster,” said Habsburg Douglas, chair of the Parliamentary Team on Moldova, which works closely with the OSCE Mission to Moldova.
“This resolution will remind the sides in Chisinau and Tiraspol that our network of parliamentarians is committed to engagement in the region. In the context of the very recent 5+2 discussions in Moscow, we hope to lend support the negotiations process.”
The resolution reaffirms support for the 5+2 negotiations as the best format for resolving the Transnistrian conflict, supports democratization efforts in the country and appeals to Russia to finalize withdrawal of its troops from Moldova.
The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly is attended by delegates from the Republic of Moldova. In particular, these delegates are -- a representative of the Democratic Party Stella Zhantuan, Liberal Democrat Simon Furdui and communist Vasile Sova.
The Republic of Moldova’s neighbor state, Ukraine, has become another supporter of Moldova in the Transnistrian conflict’s resolving.
Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. Ex-soviet state, Ukraine, borders the Russian Federation to the east and northeast, Romania and Moldova to the southwest.
Viktor Yanukovych, current Ukrainian president, said in his statement that Transnistria must remain an integral part of the Moldavian Republic. He also said that Ukraine would support Moldova's efforts to preserve the territorial integrity in Transnistrian conflict negotiations “5+2”.
