Opposition: authorities preparing for war ahead of election
The Moldovan opposition Liberal Party (PL), Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) and Our Moldova Alliance (AMN) have drawn the attention of citizens to the fact that the Communist authorities are behaving "as if they are preparing for a war".
AMN leader Serafim Urechean said at a news conference today that the special-purpose police unit Fulger had recently increased its personnel from 400 to over 1,000.
"Drills have lately been held every day. The police are taken out to special exercises by alarm. The Communists are getting ready for something, but nobody knows for what," Urechean said.
PLDM leader Vlad Filat said the Communists were seeking to disseminate panic in order "to demoralize the active part of society".
PL leader Mihai Ghimpu said he was convinced that the Communist authorities were not going to hand over state power in a democratic manner after the 29 July snap parliamentary election.
"The additional 500 million lei [about 45m dollars] allocated to the law-enforcement bodies from the state budget is a proof of this," he said.
Ghimpu said the Communists may bring people to the streets, as if on the opposition's behalf, and may beat them up or throw them to prisons, "like they already did last April during and after the riots against the alleged falsification of the 5 April parliamentary election".
