Nicolae Timofti: Moldova could have a free travel regime with the EU by the end of 2013

Nicolae Timofti, the President of Moldova

Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti is hopeful that Moldova will have a visa-free travel regime with the European Union by the end of 2013. The statement was made in an interview for Jurnal de Chisinau newspaper.

After his recent visit to Brussels, Mr. Timofti came back with a smile on his face saying that Jose Manuel Barroso was interested to meet him.

“I had a task – to convince them that we are very interested in targeting this aim for the Republic of Moldova. After the meeting, I felt that they accept and want us, but the other things hang upon us,” Nicolae Timofti said.

Moldovan President said the country is mainly interested in the Association Agreement with the European Union, adding that 10 rounds of negotiations took place so far. He explained that two more things are on the ‘to do list’ of Moldova: the anti-discrimination bill and the reform at the Center for Fight against Economic Crimes and Corruption.

“If we will do our homework in these fields, I hope we will have a visa-free travel regime by the end of 2013,” the President said.
