New Transnistrian Supreme Soviet
The first plenary sitting of the Transnistrian supreme soviet [parliament] of the 5th convocation shall be held on December 29, as per the Presidential Decree signed by region's leader Igor Smirnov.
During that sitting, the plenary powers of the new legislative forum will be officially recognized, and the supreme soviet will elect its speaker.
Last Friday, president Smirnov discussed preparation for the first plenary meeting with the speaker of the outgoing parliament Anatoly Kaminsky and central election commission chairman Piotr Denisenko.
Denisenko said that the December 12 ordinary parliamentary elections were attended by over 175 thousand citizens, which constituted 42.5% all region residents eligible to vote. That voter turnout was somewhat poorer than in 2005 and 2000. However, the elections were recognized as valid at all of the region's 43 election constituencies. And 5% voters cast their ballots "against all".
In the new 43-member Transnistrian legislative forum, 19 deputies are various-level and various-sphere bosses, 21 are civil servants (including parliamentarians of the previous convocation), 3 persons represent citizens' associations, and there are only 3 women. A majority of the new parliamentarians are members of the Obnovleniye [Renovation] Republican Party.
