New government to be formed if presidential election fails

If the parliament fails to elect a new president during the 28 May repeated presidential election, then a new cabinet will be created in one of the next days. It will work until the election of a new parliament, Moldovan First Deputy Parliament Speaker Vladimir Turcanu told journalists on Thursday.

Turcan specified that under legislation, the acting president has the right to nominate a candidate for prime minister, who will propose the government programme and its composition. Turcan explained that the current government cannot operate since it cannot adopt decisions on the state's administration.

Turcan also said that only after a new cabinet is created, outgoing President Vladimir Voronin is to issue a decree to dissolve the parliament and set the date for a snap parliamentary election. Turcan pointed out that the Moldovan Party of Communists (PCRM) is ready for a snap election.

‘Even those who cast their ballots for Liberals are worried of what is going on in Moldova and will back us’, Turcan said.

Asked if the PCRM is looking for the so-called ‘golden vote’, Turcan noted that the opposition is the one that should think about it, due to the fact that the voters are very unhappy with their persistent position to hold a snap election.

‘We are not looking for the ‘golden vote’. We believe that the politically responsible MPs, claiming to be Moldova's patriots, are obliged to express their position through vote,’ Turcan said.
