Moldova's AEI and communist opposition view situation differently
The governing Alliance for European Integration and the only opposition force in the Moldovan Parliament - the Communist Party (MCP) - are viewing the outcome of the Monday's presidential elections differently.
The Communists presume the governing alliance is on the verge of a split - at least such declaration was made by MCP Chairman Vladimir Voronin when he and his 47 party comrades were leaving the parliament room before the voting started on Monday.
Voronin said, "Today we have proved our unity and team spirit. We cannot vote for candidate of the Alliance that is waging an anti-people policy. We can't vote for Marian Lupu who has neither a firm character nor firm will".
Answering journalists' questions in the parliament building lobby, Voronin announced he would be calling on Moldova citizens to take no part in a referendum, if the Alliance for European Integration really decides to re-write the Constitution.
"We shall not permit this to happen. The Constitution is not a maid you can change the moment you wish", warned Voronin. "The Communist Party is remaining on its principal position, and shall continue working to achieve a split of the ruling coalition".
Another Communist MP, Iurie Muntean, announced, "December 7 was the last day of the majority alliance", but then tried to sound not so categorical, saying, "After the Monday's voting, the split between the AEI parties will continue deepening".
Muntean, who was a member of the parliamentary ad hoc electoral commission, stated that Marian Lupu had actually received 52 ballots in his favor, not 53, because one ballot-paper was spoiled and was recognized as null and void, "and this is a sign that the Alliance is not that monolith as it used to be recently".
Commission chairman Ion Plesca hurried to provide full clarity, saying, "That was not quite so. Really, we found a small cross that was drawn in the corner of one ballot-paper, but the paper holder voted for Marian Lupu all right. There was no ground for recognizing the paper as void. The commission recognized it as valid".
Liberal Democratic Party Chairman, Prime Minister Vlad Filat, who is still a parliamentarian, stated that the Alliance for European Integration is full of resolution to fulfill its election pledges.
Democratic Party Honorable Chairman MP Dumitru Diacov stated that ex-president Vladimir Voronin has lost control over his Communist Party, "where fear is continuing to dominate. Despite even this fear, a split in the MCP faction and the Communist Party as a whole is inevitable. I know for sure there are deputies in the MCP faction, who wanted to vote for Marian Lupu. But something very important happened last night, and they did not dare a resolute step".
In his words, "The Communists offered the Democratic Party to ruin the AEI and dismiss the Prime Minister and the Parliament Chairman. In such case, the Communists promised they would support the AEI presidential candidate. And I am grateful to Democratic Party Chairman Mr. Lupu for his resisting the temptation. He has outstood it. And we shall outstand all hardships, and shall move on".
Diacov presumes the Communists' refusal to take part in the voting today "is only leading to wreck of the party... The Communists appear to be the gravediggers of their own organization".
Prime Minister Vlad Filat stated the Alliance shall make the republic through the crisis despite whatever resistance being offered by the Communist Party.
"The very fact that the Communist faction members were placed and locked up in a separate room [in parliament] is a clear evidence that things are not very good in the MCP faction. I am sure there will be a breakdown in the faction, and in the Communist Party as a whole".
Marian Lupu stated the Alliance for European Integration shall continue acting in the interests of the Republic of Moldova and its people.
"We have proved our unity. We took a decision and are not regretting it. We have taken a general responsibility for the country's destiny, and shall be going forward with dignity", Marian Lupu stressed.
