Moldovan women likely to be represented in electoral lists at 30 per cent

The political parties will be obliged to include 30 per cent of women in their electoral lists at all the types of polls. The government adopted a draft law on the completion of the Electoral Code and will submit it to the parliament for approval.

Justice Minister Alexandru Tanase said that this document is aimed at ensuring a balance between women and men in the decision-making process and enhancing the degree of women's representation in the parliament, as well as in the district and local councils.

At the same time, the draft law will help ensure the full functioning of the democratic institutions in Moldova from the viewpoint of observance of human rights.

Statistics show that women account for over a half of Moldova's citizens. More then 51 per cent of all graduates of the education institutions of all the levels are women as well. At the same time, only 20 per cent of MPs are women, which points to an under-representation of women's interests in the state decision-making bodies.
