Moldovan top electoral body rejects Party of Communists inquiry

The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) today rejected an appeal by the Party of Communists (PCRM) requesting the sanctioning of the candidate Valeriu Cosarciuc. The PCRM argued that although minister Cosarciuc had suspended his activity, he continued to work.

A PCRM representative at the Central Electoral Commission, Vadim Motarschi, has grounded his inquiry on news disseminated by Moldpres about a meeting which was attended by Valeriu Cosarciuc. The Party of Communists asserts thus, that Valeriu Cosarciuc, who runs for MP seat on the ticket of the Our Moldova Alliance (AMN), is further exercising his working attributions, despite the fact that he was relieved from his duties. In the inquiry submitted to the CEC, the Party of Communists asked the sanctioning of the AMN candidate.

An AMN representative at the Central Electoral Commission, Dumitru Graur, said that the meeting was also attended by acting Agriculture and Food Minister. "It would have been quite different if Mr. Cosarciuc would have come with the working car," a member of the CEC, Pavel Midrigan said. The Central Electoral Commission rejected the PCRM's appeal, arguing that "Valeriu Cosarcicu did not exercise his working duties, did not make any electoral propaganda and did not use administrative resources."

At the same meeting, the CEC recorded businessman Gabriel Stati as an independent candidate for MP seat. The businessman was present nor at the moment of submitting the documents to the CEC, neither at the registration of his candidacy.

Moreover, the CEC adopted a decision on the responsibility of some ministers and state agencies for the good holding of the electoral process, which also sees that the Foreign and European Integration Minister should accredit foreign journalists.
