Moldovan senior coalition partner withdraws candidate in favour of incumbent Chisinau mayor
The senior coalition partner Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) has withdrawn its mayoral candidate in favour of incumbent Chisinau mayor and mayoral candidate of the junior coalition partner Liberal Party, Dorin Chirtoaca, the PLDM leader, Vlad Filat told a news briefing.
Filat expressed discontent with the current situation in the ruling Alliance for European Integration (AIE), noting that the latest attacks and dissensions might throw Moldova in chaos. "Given the latest assessments and our unwillingness not to cede the capital to the opposition Communists, the PLDM took a strategic decision to back the AIE contender who stands the best chances to win. In this electoral race, the Liberal Democratic Party will support the incumbent Chisinau mayor, Dorin Chirtoaca," Filat said.
He added that this decision had been well thought out and backed by the whole PLDM team. "It is not a concession, but a sacrifice meant to secure the victory from the first round of the local polls," Filat said.
The Liberal Democrat leader called on the other AIE members to support his actions. "I hope that this will be a gesture of mobilization. As for the electoral campaign, we will do our best to obtain good results."
Attending the event, the former PLDM contender for the Chisinau mayoral seat, Victor Bodiu, said that he is not upset with this decision and that he sincerely backs it. He added that he will run for a post of Chisinau municipal councillor.
