Moldovan, Russian officials discuss Transnistrian conflict
Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for reintegration issues Victor Osipov had a meeting with the special envoy of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Valeriy Nesterushkin, and an adviser to the Russian Foreign Ministry on peacekeeping missions, Marat Kulakhmetov, on 18 January. The officials discussed the issue of settling the Transnistrian conflict, the government's press service has said.
Osipov said that the Moldovan government is open for dialogue on the Transnistrian conflict settlement and listed the actions taken to bolster confidence between the two banks of the Dniester and to create a friendlier atmosphere for negotiations in the five-plus-two format.
Osipov particularly advocated conditions necessary for the free movement of people and goods between the two banks of the Dniester and for the facilitation of operations by Transnistrian enterprises.
The Moldovan official highlighted Russia's important role in the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict on the basis of Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also spoke in favour of improving the mechanism of operation of the Joint Control Commission and of the peacekeeping mechanism in the security zone.
For his part, Nesterushkin praised the open and constructive spirit of the new Moldovan authorities in the promotion of the settlement process. The Russian diplomat pointed out the need to continue political dialogue on the Transnistrian issue and spoke in favour of intensifying consultations on the matter.
