Moldovan, Romanian defence ministries to develop cooperation

The progress made by the new Moldovan government in the short time after it came to power gives us guarantees for Moldova's European path and hope that its democratic way is irreversible.

Romanian Defence Minister Gabriel Oprea made the statement at a today's meeting with his Moldovan counterpart Vitalie Marinuta, who is on a two-day official visit to Bucharest.

Gabriel Oprea said that there are all the pre-requisites necessary to restore long-term relations between the two states, based on trust, solidarity and common aspirations, after a period when cooperation ties were put to test.

Vitalie Marinuta said that it is necessary in the long run to deepen the bilateral military relations and develop them at all the levels, beginning with the tactical level up to the strategic one. "It is very important for us that we train servicemen in Romanian education institutions in the fields which our military education does not cover. The fact that we speak the same language makes their education much easier and more efficient than in other partner countries," the Moldovan minister said.

The two ministers identified practical ways to develop cooperation between the two countries' armies, laying the emphasis on training staff through joint exercises, transforming the armed forces, as well as exchange of the military staff. The officials highlighted the assistance provided by Romania in the military education area, materialized by the fact that 37 Moldovan students attend courses in Romanian military education institutions in the 2009-10 academic year.
