Moldovan referendum failed according to preliminary data
The voter turnout at the Moldovan constitutional referendum was 29.67 per cent, according to preliminary data made public by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC).
Given that the minimal voter turnout should be at least 33 per cent, the referendum, which was expected to amend the presidential election procedure, can be regarded as failed.
The highest voter turnout was recorded in Telenesti district 41.1 per cent and the lowest one in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia 8.61 per cent.
As many as 30.68 per cent of residents of Chisinau municipality participated in the referendum and 18.9 per cent in Balti municipality.
By the time when these data were unveiled, the CEC had not received yet the results of the voting abroad.
Of those who participated in the referendum, 87.16 per cent voted in favour of nationwide presidential elections and 12.84 per cent voted for presidential elections in the parliament.
