Moldovan president says forthcoming election to be fair
The Moldovan authorities are displaying a responsible attitude towards the organization of the 29 July early parliamentary election to ensure it is free and fair, the head of the OSCE/ODIHR election monitoring mission, Boris Frlec, said at a meeting with Moldovan acting President Vladimir Voronin on 15 July.
The presidential press service has said in a press release that Frlec stressed that "all participants in the election - the [ruling] Communist Party, the opposition parties, the Central Electoral Commission, the media and civil society - should display the same responsibility".
Boris Frlec informed Voronin about the composition of the OSCE/ODIHR election monitoring mission and its principles. He gave his assurances that the mission's reports would contain conclusions based "exclusively on specific and reliable data".
Voronin reiterated the intention of the Moldovan authorities to ensure that the election is conducted in a free and proper manner. He said that "the authorities have launched diverse initiatives and taken specific steps meant to remove the drawbacks identified during the 5 April parliamentary election and to ensure the properness of the electoral campaign, the voting process and its results".
"I count on an impartial and demanding approach to the electoral process by all observers. I am sure that through joint efforts the full observance of the democratic norms and principles during the snap parliamentary election in Moldova will be ensured," Voronin said.
The Communist Party is interested in holding the election "in line with the democratic standards", he said, stressing the importance of forming "a functional parliament capable of settling the problems Moldova is facing" after 29 July.
