Moldovan president meets Russian counterpart in Moscow
Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin today met Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev within a working visit to Moscow, according to the presidential press service.
In a press statement made before the meeting, Dmitriy Medvedev highlighted the importance of the visit by the Moldovan president on the 68th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. Today is a day of sadness and commemoration of the war victims, Dmitriy Medvedev said. He stressed that the citizens of the two countries experience the same emotions on 22 June, and the Russian and Moldovan peoples are connected by the joint fight against fascism and the common efforts to keep peace in our countries.
Medvedev expressed satisfaction with the possibility to discuss with the Moldovan president diverse issues of common interest, including the difficult economic situation in the region. Dmitriy Medvedev said that the today's meeting gives the possibility of considering issues of the economic cooperation between Moldova and Russia, as well as political and regional ones.
Dmitriy Medvedev said that the Russian authorities kept a close eye on the events which took place in Moldova after the 5 April parliamentary polls, they lived together with the Moldovan leadership these moments, and backed their efforts to maintain the constitutional order in Moldova, which is an independent and sovereign state.
President Vladimir Voronin said that 22 June is really a day of grievance for the two countries. He specified that over 300,000 Moldovans died in the Great Patriotic War, and Moldova too went through the experience of genocide against Jews. These events remain in the history, but we will always keep them in our memory, Vladimir Voronin said. The president referred to the actions undertaken by the Moldovan authorities to restore and preserve military monuments, as well as those connected with the veterans' social support. To be with you today is an important thing, as namely Russia and the Russian people bore the hardest burden of this war, Vladimir Voronin said. The president specified that a string of actions dedicated to the heroes who died in the Great Patriotic War are held in Moldova too.
Vladimir Voronin thanked the Russian leadership for the moral and political support given to Moldova's legal authorities in the difficult political situation in which Moldova found itself after the 5 April polls. We highly appreciate the position that was expressed clearly and at an opportune moment, the president said.
The president said that the political situation is normal in Moldova now, and the government works as normal. He said that Moldova is preparing for holding the early parliamentary election, provoked by the opposition parliamentary parties which did not participate in the election of the head of state.
At the end of the meeting, Vladimir Voronin expressed confidence that the today's meeting with the Russian president will contribute to fostering and consolidating the Moldovan-Russian friendship and cooperation relations in the interest and for the benefit of the two countries and peoples.
