Moldovan president, Council of Europe official discuss shift to post-monitoring stage

Moldova is likely to shift to the stage of post-monitoring by the Council of Europe. This subject was tackled at a today's meeting between Moldovan acting President Marian Lupu and Council of Europe Director-General of Democracy and Political Affairs Jean-Louis Laurens.

Lupu said the Council of Europe is a strategic partner for Moldova, noting that the shift to the post-monitoring stage would be a step forward in the Moldovan-EU relations. "Presently, we are drafting a comprehensive action plan for the implementation of all Moldova's commitments towards the Council of Europe. This document is to be given the final touches and passed by the parliament to be granted the status of law. These actions shall drive us closer to the post-monitoring stage, which is a new dimension in our relations with the Council and Europe and the European Union," Lupu said.

Talking to journalists, Council of Europe Director-General of Democracy and Political Affairs Jean-Louis Laurens said that there are no precise timeframes for Moldova to enter the post-monitoring stage. "During the today's discussion with Marian Lupu, we approached the aspects and commitments that need to be observed so that Moldova can shift to a new level. The decision is to be taken following a report by the rapporteurs who had visited Moldova," Laurens said.

Jean-Louis Laurens is on a visit to Moldova to assess the current stage and to outline the future priorities in the cooperation between Moldova and the Council of Europe.
