Moldovan premier commemorates victims of Stalin-era repression

Prime Minister Vlad Filat today laid flowers at a foundation stone of a monument to the victims of the Stalin-era repression in the Square of the Chisinau-based train terminal, the government's press service has said.

Attending the event were members of the Cabinet of Ministers and lawmakers.

Prime Minister Vlad Filat told journalists that 70 years ago, Moldova's current territory was forcibly occupied by the former USSR as a consequence of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviet Union and the Nazi Germany, document which has been repeatedly condemned in Moldova.

"At this point, I would like to read out provisions of the Declaration of Independence, which condemn the events that took place 70 years ago in an exhaustive manner," Filat said.

The prime minister noted that very many people suffered and were deported in the wake of the occupation.

"The monument in the square of the train terminal is a symbol of the drama of our citizens. It is homage paid to those who suffered because of the then regime," Filat said.
