Moldovan police deny involvement in election campaign
The following is the text of a report published under the headline "The Interior Ministry does not interfere in the election campaign" in the pro-government newspaper Moldova Suverana on 7 July (in Romanian):
Following some attempts to deliberately discredit police, the Moldovan Interior Ministry has categorically rejected all accusations about the alleged involvement of the ministry's leadership and employees in the ongoing election campaign [for the 29 July early parliamentary election], describing them as absolutely groundless.
In a statement for the media, the Interior Ministry said that "its only mission during the election campaign is exclusively to ensure security of citizens". It also "categorically denies any forms of involvement in the campaign on behalf of whatever political forces".
The Interior Ministry will carefully consider all cases of involvement of law enforcers in the election campaign. The ministry also asks for the support of the mass media, civil society and all election contenders in identifying cases of police involvement in the election campaign. "The Interior Ministry gives assurances that all discovered cases would be made public, while those found guilty would be held responsible in line with Moldovan legislation," the ministry said in its statement.
At the end of the statement, the Interior Ministry called upon all participants in the campaign to abstain from deliberately politicizing the work of law-enforcement bodies.

Note: The Moldovan Interior Ministry issued a similar statement ahead of the 5 April parliamentary election.
