Moldovan PM meets EU commissioners for agriculture, transport in Brussels

Prime Minister Vlad Filat had meetings with EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Dacian Ciolos and EU Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas in Brussels on 15 September, the government s communication and media relations department has said.

The sides discussed development prospects of Moldova's agricultural sector, in particular the vine-growing and wine-making sector.

Filat talked about his visit to China and prospects for Moldovan wine-makers on this market. Also, Filat pointed out the interest of Chinese companies in launching investment projects in Moldova.

The prime minister also referred to projects due to be launched in Moldova's vine-growing and wine-making sector with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank

Vlad Filat said that the increase in wine quota on the EU market will foster the development of the vine-growing and wine-making sector in Moldova.

Filat thanked Dacian Ciolos for constant support and openness towards Moldova.

Ciolos said that Moldova has been making progress due to the ambitious agenda of reforms that it has been implementing.

The EU commissioner said that an EU mission will soon visit Moldova to assess the socioeconomic impact of the planned double increase in the quota of Moldovan wine exports to the EU market.

The official said that this analysis may serve as basis for future concessions to Moldova in terms of foodstuffs exported to the EU.

The sides discussed ways to ensure the quality of foodstuffs by opening quality testing labs.

Filat said that Moldova will take all measures necessary to ensure the highest quality of its food products.

"We committed to do that and we will respect our commitment," Filat said.

The meeting with Siim Kallas approached Moldova's accession to the European Common Aviation Area and the Transport Community Treaty, and cooperation within regional organizations.

Filat said that Moldova is interested in joining the European Common Aviation Area and that the government was expecting a fact-collecting visit by experts of the European Commission.

"We hope that once this mission unveils its conclusions, the European Commission will adopt the mandate necessary to start negotiations with Moldova. The Moldovan authorities are willing to launch these negotiations," Filat said.

Siim Kallas welcomed the government's actions to get closer to the EU and its standards, specifying that it chose the right way to do this.
