Moldovan PM: ex-president "armed", "dangerous for society"
Moldova's ex-President and Communist Party leader Vladimir Voronin owns a complete arsenal of guns - 84 units, half of which have rifled barrels, Interior Minister Victor Catan said at a cabinet meeting on 14 April. Catan said that Voronin's collection of firearms is the second largest in Moldova. The largest collection belonged to businessman Adrian Nichifor presently accused of murder.
"Vladimir Voronin owns the second largest collection of arms among private people. He has 84 weapons, of which 42 have rifled barrels. Some of them are prohibited for private people," Catan said.
Prime Minister Vlad Filat instructed the relevant bodies to check whether the firearms are kept in secure conditions, including those of former state officials and Vladimir Voronin. "Taking into account Voronin's current ! psychic condition, he is dangerous for society. He had and still has state bodyguards and police, and in addition he is armed! This deputy champion in terms of possession of weapons should be put under control in order to avoid any surprises!" Filat said. Presently, the legislation sets no limit on the number of arms owned by private people. Filat asked that their number should be limited by legislation in order to prevent the creation of "guerrilla bands".
