Moldovan PM: Constitution should be amended prior to election

It is very essential to introduce amendments to Article 78 in the Republic of Moldova Constitution [pertaining to electing president by parliament] prior to early parliamentary elections, Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat stated in Berlin during his meeting with Gunther Krichbaum, Chairman of the standing commission for European affairs of the German Bundestag.

Filat, on a 2-day visit to Germany this week, stressed that only in such case Moldova will be saved from a repetition of the present-day situation in the republic, when its Parliament appears to be unable to elect a new head of state.

At the same time, Vlad Filat informed the German parliamentarian that the reforms undertaken by the new democratic leadership of the Republic of Moldova are extremely important for the country, and, fortunately, first signs of an economic growth can be observed.

"The most important thing achieved at the initial reform stage was stabilization of situation in the national economy", Filat said.

Gunther Krichbaum thinks is it important for Moldova to proceed with its European integration efforts and with consistent implementation of the reforms.

On Tuesday, Vlad Filat met also with Helmut Rau, State Minister of Land Baden Wurttemberg. The parties discussed reforms in Moldova and its strivings for integration into Europe.

The Moldovan Premier highly appreciated the valuable assistance Germany provides for Moldova.

On Tuesday, Premier Vlad Filat visited certain production facilities of the Mercedes corporation, in particular the Daimler AG plant in the city of Sindelfingen, where nearly 2 thousand cars are made daily. In 2008, the corporation sold 130 Mercedes cars in Moldova, and in 2009 - only 70, due to an economic crisis. But already in the 1st quarter of 2010, Moldova bought 70 cars.

The Prime Minister said that he likes the corporation's motto, "Either Best or Nothing", and that he would like to introduce it in his Government. He said Moldova is interested in having more foreign investors to come to the republic.
