Moldovan parliament dismisses head of Supreme Court of Justice

The parliament today dismissed the head of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ), Ion Muruianu, by majority vote.

Parliament Speaker Mihai Ghimpu noted that "under the legislation, the Superior Council of Magistrates (CSM) only proposes the appointment of the CSJ head, and not their dismissal, and the final decision is up to the parliament".

MP Vitalie Nagacevschi said that the reasons for Muruianu's dismissal are a large number of files lost at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), and the CSJ head's verbal attack against journalists. Muruianu labeled journalists as "rabid dogs".

Mihai Ghimpu said that Muruianu conscientiously pronounced a string of sentences which were condemned by the ECHR, thus inflicting damages worth over 2.7 million euros to Moldova. "He was aware of the sentences he pronounced, knowing that they can reach the ECHR. Justice is compromised in Moldova, we should make changes, so that it becomes fair and that people may trust," Ghimpu said.

At the parliament meeting, Justice Minister Alexandru Tanase said that the parliament dismissed Muruianu from the post of CSJ head, and not from the post of judge. "We do not interfere in the justice act, he was dismissed from an administrative post and not from the one of judge," Tanase added.
