Moldovan opposition makes joint appeal to voters ahead of election

The opposition Liberal Party, the Liberal Democratic Party and the Our Moldova Alliance have called on voters "to participate in the 29 July early parliamentary election, to resolutely oppose fear, poverty and dictatorship, and to cast their ballots for freedom, democracy and Moldova's European future".

Moldova is to hold an early poll after lawmakers elected on 5 April failed to elect a president.

In a joint statement, the three parties said that on 29 July voters will have to make a choice "between past and future, poverty and well-being, dictatorship and freedom".

"We have a chance to democratically remove the Communist Party from power and make changes in Moldova. The ongoing political crisis is a manifestation of Communist authorities' incompetence and we will be able to overcome it only together," the document says.

"The 29 July parliamentary election will test society's political maturity," the three parties said in their joint statement.
"We should behave so that after the election we were able to look into the eyes of our children and grandchildren with the feeling of a fulfilled task. Let's assess our chance and elect the future," the statement says.

On 27 July, the leaders of the three opposition parties gave a joint news conference at which they expressed confidence that they will win the forthcoming election and pledged to cooperate and work as a team after the election, the Moldovan news agency Infotag reported at 1103 gmt on 27 Jul 09.
