Moldovan official: Land in Palanka should not be ceded to Ukraine
Land in Palanka is an inseparable part of the Moldovan territory, so it shall not be ceded to Ukraine, Moldovan Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Popov has stated.
He emphasized that all the ongoing speculations about cessation of the land under the Odessa-Reni highway section, running via Palanka, are just illegitimate.
In 1998, he said, the Moldovan Government concluded an agreement with Ukraine on giving the land plot occupied by the highway (7.7 kilometers long and 23 meters wide - into Ukraine's use.
"Both the land under the road up to the very magma and the air above the road - all this is Moldova's property. Should diamonds be discovered under the highway, the deposit will indeed be the Moldovan property", said Deputy Minister Andrei Popov.
In his words, the Moldovan farmlands, lying on the other side of the highway, shall not undergo any changes, either, so Palanca farmers are free to cross the road and go to their fields when they only wish to.
According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, the Palanca portion of the Odessa-Reni highway came onto Moldova's balance only in 1995, and on August 18, 1999 it was given over onto the Ukraine's balance as per the Border Treaty signed between the two countries. The Treaty was ratified by the Moldovan Parliament, and in July 2001 was promulgated by President Voronin. The document was signed for two main reasons - to facilitate the using of the highway by Ukrainians, and to give Moldova 430 meters of land on the Danube River bank.
