Moldovan non-Communist parties agree to continue coalition talks

The leaders of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), Democratic Party (PD) and Liberal Party (PL) have decided to continue coalition talks on 27 December. The three leaders made this statement after the ninth round of trilateral negotiations held at the state residence on 26 December.

Talking to journalists after the meeting, PLDM leader Vlad Filat said that his party had asked that a document on the formation of a ruling coalition should be drafted.

For his part, the Democrats' leader, Marian Lupu said that the PD would continue talks on both axes and that on 27 December he would meet representatives of the Party of Communists (PCRM), as well as of the Liberal Democratic Party and Liberal Party. He added that a final decision might be made public on 27 December.

"Despite pressure exerted on the PD, the talks will continue and tomorrow I will give a clearer answer," Lupu said.

The leader of the Liberal Party, Mihai Ghimpu, confirmed the fact that the sides failed to reach consensus on several dimensions. Referring to the PLDM's proposal, Ghimpu said that each party came with its own draft agreement on the formation of a four-year ruling coalition.

On 21 December, the Liberal Democratic Party offered 56 per cent of the government posts to the Democratic Party and Liberal Party. Filat said there was no more room for compromises. Yet, Ghimpu said he would not agree to form a government without having enough levers. "We will not enter a government as outrunners just for the sake of the alliance," Ghimpu pointed out.
