Moldovan Liberals want Communist leader stripped of parliamentary immunity
The parliament is likely to hold a meeting on 28 November to discuss the possibility of lifting the parliamentary immunity of Communists' leader Vladimir Voronin without the consent of the juridical commission for rules and immunity, the deputy leader of the Liberal Party, Valeriu Munteanu, said today.
According to Munteanu, Liberals' leader Mihai Ghimpu will insist that the parliament meet and discuss the issue. "Each person should be held responsible no matter whether they are involved in some election campaign or not," Munteanu said.
Munteanu unveiled data about companies that allegedly belong to the Voronin family and which are said to be involved in the privatization of land plots at a price lower than the market price. He noted that "the money that was not paid to the state is being used in the ongoing campaign".
On 11 October, the juridical commission for rules and immunity examined a request by the Prosecutor General's Office to lift Voronin's parliamentary immunity and decided that the request should be returned to the prosecution because of "lack of evidence".
