Moldovan Democrats announce candidate for Chisinau mayor
The members of the Chisinau territorial organization of the ruling coalition partner Democratic Party (PD) nominated Labour, Social Protection and Family Minister Valentina Buliga as candidate for the post of Chisinau mayor.
Buliga's candidacy was put forward by PD leader Marian Lupu and was unanimously voted.
Valentina Buliga was surprised at the party's decision. "The post of mayor will be a provocation for me, since I have to prove that women can succeed. I am aware of the issues the city is facing, and I will work on a strategy, which will allow solving all of them", Buliga said.
Valentina Buliga is the deputy leader of the PD and the chairwoman of the women's organisation.
On 2 April, the opposition Party of Communists (PCRM) nominated Igor Dodon as candidate for the post of Chisinau mayor. The Liberals said they will nominate acting mayor Dorin Chirtoaca. The extra-parliamentary Christian Democratic Popular Party put forward Radu Busila for this post.
The senior coalition partner Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) has not nominated its candidate for the mayoral seat yet. PLDM leader Vlad Filat said a decision on the matter would be announced this week. He added that many mayoral candidacies are being considered.
According to the parliament's decision, the local polls will be held on 5 June 2011.
