Moldovan Communists say to vote for apolitical president, seek grand coalition
The Party of Communists (PCRM) will vote for an apolitical president or for one nominated by a grand coalition. Otherwise, a snap parliamentary election will be held, PCRM leader Vladimir Voronin said today. He added that his party will not vote for a president nominated by the ruling Alliance for European Integration (AIE).
Voronin said that the PCRM had not put forward a candidate for the office of deputy speaker yet, because this would mean that the Party of Communists shall participate in the government act. "On 22 January, a plenary meeting of the party will be held and this issue will be tackled. We must discuss this. Our representatives' participation means automatically our participation in the government act. We want a grand coalition instead of carrying their candlestick behind them," Voronin said.
Vladimir Voronin said that he trusts his party fellows and the AIE will not find the two votes necessary to elect the president. "The two votes do not belong only to the PCRM, but to the entire people. We can neither sell nor buy them. We do not accept a bone, such as the post of parliament deputy speaker. We will give the necessary votes if there is a grand coalition and equal powers."
The Communist leader avoided saying why the Democratic Party chose the AIE and not a centre-left coalition. Yet, he said that the negotiations were very advanced, and the coalition document was about to be signed.
