Moldovan communists say opposition may provoke civil war

The ruling Communist Party (PCRM) does not rule out the fact that the opposition's actions may lead to "a Kosovo variant" in Moldova, to a civil war.

A PCRM pre-electoral statement has said that if events develop under the opposition's scenario of destabilizing the situation, "Moldova will become an uncontrolled territory, on which a civil war will inevitably break out". "They are good at this, they are skilful when it comes to provocation. And this will suit all those for whom the Communists are a hindrance. This will suit international criminals, those who dictate their will to leader of the opposition Liberal Democratic Party Filat, Liberal Party leader Ghimpu and Our Moldova Alliance leader Urechean. A country without authorities is favourable to laundering dirty money. This will suit the regime which rules the breakaway Dniester region, Tiraspol is waiting for a present like this. This will suit chauvinists in Bucharest advocating the creation of Great Romania, because it would be easy to turn a territory like this into a component part of Romania," the document said. The Communists said that the "marionette parties, that are managed from abroad, are not attacking the PCRM, but are targeting our fatherland".

"They are naming themselves enemies of the Communists, but each of their blows strikes the country, Moldova, its people, the elderly, women and children, those whom they forced to take to the streets reference to the 7 April riots and whom they are set to force to take to the streets again," the statement said. The Communists called on people "who cherish peaceful and quiet life" to defend the fatherland.

In another report, Infotag quoted the same PCRM statement saying that the 29 July snap parliamentary election (provoked by the opposition after refusing to participate in the presidential election) "is the choice between extremists and backers of Moldova's statehood, between street arbitrariness and law, and between losing the country and securing its independence".
