Moldovan Communists Appeal Speaker's Election
The Moldovan Communist Party (CPRM) has asked the Constitutional Court (CC) to urgently examine the legitimacy of Liberal Party leader Mihai Ghimpu's election as parliament speaker, CC representative Alla Tanache has told Infotag.
She said that the request was submitted to the CC by Communist MPs Maria Postoico and Vladimir Turcan, as well as by Communist Party's representative to the Central Electoral Commission Sergiu Sirbu.
"I do not know what exactly the request says. My duty is to receive and forward it to the CC leadership. Judges are to take the decision on what to do next," Tanache said.
Mihai Ghimpu was elected Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament at the first plenary meeting of the newly-elected legislative forum on August 28 by the 53-strong non-communist Alliance for European Integration. For its part, the Communist Party says that parliament did not have the right to continue its activities after the 48 Communist MPs asked for a break in the parliament's activities until September 4 in order to form its parliamentary faction, and then walked out of the session hall.
