Moldovan anti-corruption centre officer wounded, in grave condition

An employee of the Centre for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption (CCCEC) was seriously wounded while carrying out a search operation in a smuggling case in Stefan Voda district in the evening of 11 April, the deputy director of the CCCEC prosecution department general, Bogdan Zumbreanu, told a news conference today.

Zumbreanu noted that the incident took place in a private house in the village of Tudora. During the search, one of the people who were in the house took a pistol, fired at the CCCEC employees several times and wounded an operative intervention officer.

Zumbreanu specified that the Centre's employee was equipped in line with the regulation, had all the distinctive signs and introduced himself when entering the house. The CCCEC officer is presently in a grave condition and is being operated. The person who attacked the CCCEC employee was apprehended.

The perpetrator runs the risk of 12-year imprisonment.

Referring to the smuggling ring investigated by the Centre, Bogdan Zumbreanu said that it comprises about 12 people, including employees of the Border Guards Service who were smuggling goods from Ukraine without paying customs duties. At present, eight members of the criminal ring are under arrest at the CCCEC remand centre.
