Moldovan acting president meets newly appointed judges
Acting President, Parliament Speaker Mihai Ghimpu today met a group of newly-appointed judges to discuss the restoration of the image of the judicial system, the settlement of problems faced by judges, as well as the work of judges, the presidential press service has said.
Mihai Ghimpu urged the judges to honestly do their job. He stressed that there are no politically grounded trials in Moldova anymore and the justice should administered by taking into account the law's provisions. "The supremacy of law should be obligatory for everybody in a democratic state based on the rule of law, especially for the panel of judges, as they are those who complete the trial," the president said.
The participants in the meeting also discussed the gaps existing in the judicial system, the corruption phenomenon, cases lost by Moldova at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), restoration of citizens' confidence in judges, etc. Mihai Ghimpu said that, by the appointment of these judges, a process of forming a new group of specialists in the field started. He emphasized that the latter are meant to adjust the system to the international standards, restore citizens' trust in justice.
"All the 17 judges are upright people who have been doing their job honestly. The former government dismissed one of them, as he did not accept to comply with political orders," the head of state said.
