Moldova:Liberal mayoral candidate says he expected tight electoral fight

The newly-elected Chisinau mayor, Dorin Chirtoaca, has told the journalists during a today's meeting that he expected the runoff election to be tight.

He noted that the victories scored in the runoff election are a worldwide tendency. "Even in the parliamentary election, we have constantly recorded 60 to 41 mandates," Chirtoaca said. "I don't think we have ever had such balance of power in Moldova, when the difference was of several tens of votes by 4:00 AM", he said.

"The participation in the polls is an important factor too. I was sure of my victory when I found out that the voter turnover was higher in the runoff than in the first round", Chirtoaca said.

Referring to his Communist challenger, Igor Dodon, the newly-elected mayor expressed hope that Dodon "will not go for ridiculous shows and hysteria". "We will see how cooperative they can be. We hope that they will not go for sabotage again ", Chirtoaca said about the Communist councillors.

"We have an elected mayor, but the Municipal Council is not elected yet", Chirtoaca noted. On the next Thursday, the Chisinau district electoral council will recount the votes cast for the municipal council, in consistency with a decision by the Chisinau-based Court of Appeal.

According to preliminary data, Dorin Chirtoaca scored a victory over Igor Dodon by 50.6 per cent to 49.4 per cent.
