The Republic of Moldova is initiating negotiations on a new Agreement with the European Union, as per a Decree signed by Acting President Mihai Ghimpu on Wednesday.

On November 13, the Government passed a decision on preparing the draft of such Agreement, and requested profiled ministries concerned to prepare necessary documents. The negotiations are expected to start in January 2010.

De jure, the Republic of Moldova established relations with the European Union in 1994, when the two sides signed a Partnership & Cooperation Agreement for a 10-year period, which was subsequently extended for an unspecified time.

The EU-Moldova European Neighborhood Policy Action Plan, signed in February 2005 for 3 years, became an essential step in the development of relations between Moldova and the European Union. And in 2008, the European Union provided a regime of autonomous trade preferences for Moldova.

The would-be new Agreement in question is expected to envisage the creation of a free trade regime, a wider access for Moldova to the European market of goods, services and investments, with a perspective of Moldova's subsequent integration into the EU economy. Moldova is also counting on receiving the status of an associated member of the European Union.
